the entirely boring saga of the no. 2 pencil skirt in double-serge cotton

doug funnie's closet.

i try to avoid this. even though it would probably save me time in the mornings.

I have an interview tomorrow and I don’t even know what to wear to it (the horror), so, an update.

I’m kind of obsessed with pencil skirts.  They’re just stylish enough to wear to lab without feeling ridiculous, just practical enough to wear anywhere else without feeling ridiculous(ly overdressed), they go with basically anything, they come in a variety of interesting colors so I don’t feel like Doug Funnie (you know, from the TV show Doug?), and they’re flattering.  And so this summer when I was scouring the sale racks at J. Crew (I don’t remember how I wandered in there in the first place, but I was probably avoiding lab.) I encountered the No. 2 Pencil Skirt in black (to wear to the upcoming neuroscience conference! … er … right?).  So I bought for 50% off.

While visiting one of the 212103923 J Crews along the east coast that I went to this summer, I found another No. 2 Pencil Skirt in “warm jade,” which is a lovely bright green, and I bought it, too.  But then I had no idea what to wear it with, so I returned it.  Then I felt bad for returning it because it’s really nice! So of course I re-bought it on eBay.  I found a website called J Crew Aficionada  where I posted asking for tips on how to style a warm green pencil skirt and in case you were wondering, “warm jade” goes with a lot of other colors — navy, neutral, black, purple, etc.

Then one day I was checking the J Crew website (I guess by now this post makes me sound like some sort of J Crew obsessed freak and/or materialist.  Eh … whatevs.)  and the golden burgundy color was magically available in my size.  So I pounced (… almost literally?).  Then today there was an additional 30% off final sale so I bought another one.  I might have a problem?

Okay, so now I own pencil skirts in many colors of the rainbow.  (Incidentally, I don’t think I own any other kinds of skirts right now.)  Or I will, when my super-backordered skirt in natural white arrives after Thanksgiving.  I was considering getting another in wool, too.  But considering that I just bought tickets home for both Christmas and Thanksgiving, I think I’m going to let my bank account recover first.

*steps back, takes a deep breath, and stops thinking about skirts*

Side note: J. Crew is currently having an extra-30%-off promotion with the promo code LOVEIT through 9/21.  Do as I say, not as I do…
